Positions:
Favor FuturePlan, but are wary
of the effects of environmental encroachment on the area's quality of
life. Though the Vermillion Chamber of Commerce would like to ensure that
the environmental amenities of the region are protected from unchecked
growth and development, they feel that the strategic purchase of open
space and a re-classification of forest lands would ensure that sensitive
areas are buffered from rampant growth while providing outdoor recreational
activities for the new, high tech workforce that would be drawn to the
area. Chip Wheeler, a high tech executive and 10 years resident of Vermillion
is the standing president of the Vermillion Chamber of Commerce. He feels
that the time is ripe for introducing a broader economic base to the area
by tapping into the changing technologically based economy. Though wary
of the extent of growth slated in the area, he feels that it is in the
best long terms interests of the region to attract high tech growth because
it will bring more money into the local economy to protect the environment,
enhance educational facilities, and provide other social services not
currently offered due to budgetary constraints due to a shrinking local
tax base. |
