Mission
The
Historic Industries Coalition is devoted to the preservation of industries
that allowed the Silver County region to grow and flourish, namely farming,
logging, small scale mining, and ranching. These industries have come
to symbolize the heart and soul of the area and have been a part of the
region's history since settlers first populated this area. It is the mission
of the HIC to preserve not only the vitality of these industries for the
future but to protect the history, culture, and lifestyles that have accompanied
these industries.
Interests
- work to preserve the traditional
industries of farming, logging, and small scale farming associated with
the region
- work to preserve the history
and heritage of these industries through the preservation of mining
and farming artifacts and architecture
Positions
They are for FuturePlan because
diffused growth in the region would put in danger unprotected historic
farmland property, mining artifacts, and other historical areas. They
are wary that FuturePlan would allow runaway growth outside of the existing
urban area would endanger historic mining sites, historic town sites of
the original mining towns, allow growth to endanger existing farmland
and ranching operations, and could ultimately force these industries to
sell their properties to make money from land by selling it to developers.
A spokesperson for the group argues that we need to preserve these industries
in an uncertain market. Because of the technology boom and subsequent
dot-com bust, the group feels that we should keep the local economy one
that is diverse and fueled by multiple industries, especially those that
made the region what it has come to be. The spokesperson also argued that
if farmers, ranchers, and mining operations sell their land to developers,
what is built in place of the existing farmhouses, ranchlands, and mining
shacks will lack the history and meaning that these current landscapes
possess.
