Mission:

The mission of SANE is to protect the natural beauty and splendor of the open, rolling landscape of the silver county region through the creation of open space, natural preserves, and protected areas. to designate these areas as such, SANE aims to use philanthropic and governmental contributions to purchase tracts of land to protect them from environmentally destructive growth and development.

Interests:

  • actively seek out grants, philanthropic contributions, and other funding sources that will go toward an environmental land trust to buy up land that would otherwise be slated for development
  • work to create nature preserves
  • work with local governments to purchase and zone tracts of land as open space
  • protect sensitive ecosystems from fragmentation
  • promote the responsible use of open spaces by restricting certain, potentially destructive activities

Positions:

SANE is in favor of the contiguous growth proposal outlined in FuturePlan, but only if the areas in sensitive environmental areas that currently slated for development will be re-zoned as open space. Abigail Fisher, lead community organizer for SANE argues that the contiguous growth plan would effectively buffer environmentally sensitive areas from new growth predicted for the region. She indicated that "SANE is in favor of  growth control and urban growth boundaries, but there needs to be a provision in the plan that restricts certain types of recreational activities from running amuck." She is not in opposition to all recreation in the area, but wants to restrict certain activities that are especially destructive or disruptive such as off-trail four-wheeling, snowmobiling, and unauthorized camping and campfires.
