ABSTRACT:

Toward Pollution-free Manufacturing is a practical examination of the Standard Industrial Codes which apply to manufacturing wastes.

Toward Pollution-free Manufacturing is a publication of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance in association with the American Management Association and is one volume of the AMA Management Briefing series. It will be of interest to those who seek a cursory understanding of the Standard Industry Code (SIC) for a variety of manufacturing concerns. The first chapter of the book is an interview with the, then, EPA Administrator, Lee Thomas, and, in part, discusses the impact of Superfund on business. Chapter two seeks a definition of waste reduction and considers multiple methods for implementing a waste reduction program.

Chapter three focuses on the chemical and allied products industry and the applicable, SIC 28. Chapter four examines the application of SIC 34 to the manufacture of fabricated material (electroplating) products. Chapter five considers the impact on the non-electric and electric machinery manufacturers of SIC 35 & 36. Chapter six focuses more closely on the manufacture of electronic (printed circuit) equipment and SIC 36. Chapter seven examines the application SIC 49 to electric, gas and water utilities. The final chapter discusses the possibilities for financing a waste reduction program.

Toward Pollution-free Manufacturing is a cursory examination of the Standard Industrial Codes which affect various manufacturing concerns, and will serve as a foundation for the reader to pursue the topic further. The text is appended with references and resources.
