ABSTRACT:

Public Interest in the Use of Private Lands is an examination of the justification for public control over the use of private lands when that use exceeds the purely self-regarding category.

Public Interest in the Use of Private Lands will be of interest to those who seek an understanding of the reasons for regulation of private land use by public entities. The text is a collection of the work of multiple authors and is part of the Environmental Regeneration Series edited by W. R. Eblen and R. A. Eblen. The first chapter is an overview by the editors of the public interest in the use of public lands. The second chapter, by Raymond C. Loehr. examines the multi-media aspects of waste management. This is followed by a similar examination focused on the management of toxic substances.

The fourth chapter discusses biotechnology and so-called 'thoroughbred' agriculture. Chapter five addresses the problem of maintaining agricultural land in the face of a push to develop petroleum resources. Pierre Crosson examines the multiplicity of values at stake in the preservation of agricultural land. Joseph Browder addresses the difficulties which are faced in the siting of industrial facilities in the Western United States.

Chapter eight considers the cross-media aspects of acid-rain. Evan Vlachos discusses the relationship between comprehensive planning and an environmental ethos. In chapter ten, Norma Berg attempts to enumerate the necessary information one needs in order to evaluate land use. The final chapter examines nuclear waste packaging in a facility case study which illustrates an innovative process and inventive solutions.

Public Interest in the Use of Private Lands is a closely focused collection of work which addresses the need for continued public control of private land when that use extends beyond purely self-regarding consequences.
